"Uncommon Want"
"Uncommon Want" is an essay I wrote a year or two ago about the excesses of reality shows on television. I was unsuccessful in selling it to several smartass magazines, which is disappointing, because I really think this is a good essay. It's dated now, though, by the shows it references and probably isn't salable in its current condition. I've therefore decided to share it with you here. If I can find the time, I may modify it so that I can find a home for it. That makes it a work-in-progress, and I thought you might like to see it. "Tooth Fairy Decay"
When my daughter lost a tooth, she did what all good little girls do. She hid it under her pillow for the Tooth Fairy. Unfortunately, the tooth was still there in the morning. This essay is about that horrible event and the, to my mind, even more horrible solution Jennifer and I created. It's not quite in what I consider publishable shape. It's lacking a certain something, and it needs to be crafted more. In particular, I'm not happy with the ending. It needs a better punchline that still says the same thing that the current one does.
But I thought it would be interesting enough to share with my readers. Drop me a line at john@johnphythyon.com if you'd like to offer some feedback. Click on the link below to read it.

Andrea Lamers's Birthday
This is a piece that started out strong and seemed to peter out. I had a really good idea reflecting on the birthday of one of my archrivals and then passage of time, but I got towards the end of it and didn't seem to have anything to say. Or, more accurately, I had a point that I was trying to make, but I don't think I did it in such a way that it had any real meaning.
Anyway, I think this essay needs a revision, but I'm not fully sure where. If you have some thoughts, I'd be glad to hear them at john@johnphythyon.com. Click on the link below to check out this piece.
